About Us
Shishukunj Mombasa has been operating its routine activities on every Saturday and Sunday, at Shivalay Temple. Intake for new students is carried once in a year (beginning January) upon children reaching the age of seven years. Activities on Saturday begin from 3:00p.m to 6:15p.m while on Sunday it begins from 9:00a.m to 12:30p.m.
Various activities (Pravruti) done include:
Basic pravrutis
- Prarthna
- Gujarati classes
- Dumbbells
- Lezim
- Magdal
- Lathi
- Kawayat
- Sangeet (Harmonium & tabla)
- Vyayam (Exercise & Yoga)
- Vartalap (on various issues i. e educative, inspirational, religious & many more)
- Games (both traditional & modern games e. g Kho-Kho, Kabadi, langdi, Ram-Raja, dodge ball, rounders, volleyball and many others)
Baal Kala Darshan pravrutis
- Raas garba
- Drawing, painting & colouring
- Paper cutting
- Collage
- Potato, leaf, stalk printing
- Balsabha
- Pyramids making
- Oratory public speaking
Extra-curricular activities
- Picnics (including a day out or 1 night picnic)
- Camping
- Seva activities (feeding the poor, a fun day with less fortunate children)
- Celebrating religious & cultural functions (Uttarayan, Ganpati Visarjan, Navratri e.t.c)
- Sports day
On Saturdays, after 6:15 p.m karyakar class is often held to discuss various issues affecting the running of Shishukunj and plan for the future programs. It’s good to note that during this period upcoming karyakars are usually trained to become fully pledged karyakars.
The uniform is as follows:
- Bhaiyos: White shorts with 2 blue strips at the sides & white shirt
- Benos: White dress & trouser with a blue belt
- Karyakar bhaiyos: White trouser and white shirt
- Karyakar benos: White dress & trouser with a blue belt together with a blue diagonal cloth strip from the shoulders
Apart from the weekend running of Shishukunj, there is also a provision for sabhyos interested in learning of harmonium & tabla.
- Harmonium class – held every Wednesdays from 6:00p.m to 7:00p.m
- Tabla class – held every Fridays from 6:00p.m to 7:00p.m
These sabhyos are also taught to maintain their instruments as well as repair them.
There is also a library within, offering both Gujarati & English books (fiction and non-fiction) to sabhyos who can also borrow them for a specific period of time upon being library members.
Not only do we concentrate on our pravrutis but also provide room for sabhyos creativity and talents, which are nurtured and due support provided.
There is more and more to learn in both educational & life skill throughout your life in Shishukunj. It’s through various positions one holds or is promoted to such as Dasta Nayak, Guuch Nayak, karyakar, Shakha-Nayab, Shakha-Nayak, librarian that one acquires experience and skills.
