Shishukunj Day Care School, Bal Kelavani Mandir, Bagasara

Shishukunj has collaborated with Bal Kelavani Mandir, Bagasara not only to provide education to the children of the nomadic communities of Bagasara, but to implement life skills, morals and values from which they can gain independence and confidence for their own future – learning to take responsibility for their future and in which direction they want it to go. The endeavor seeks to emphasize that through education the families can break out of the vicious cycle of financial instability and explore avenues with more potential.

The Day Care School for Slum Children was established in 2013 and caters to the children from the migrant Saraniya, Luhariya and Devipujak communities residing in the periphery of the small town of Bagasara. It aims to:

  • Bring children to Shishukunj Day Care Centre from their homes
  • Provide a creative, fun approach to education
  • Impart Health Awareness and hygiene implemented – increasing child self- sufficiency.
  • Introduce computer and music skills to the children
  • Constantly explore new ways to educate the children
  • Help them to get into main stream education system

Every day, the children arrive at the campus by 8:30 am and spend the whole day engaging in activity based learning. The full day provides a positive atmosphere whereby the children are under good influences which they can carry as life lessons.

Till date, over 80 children from these communities have been enrolled in the Day Care School. Thirteen boys, who are in the upper-primary levels, have been admitted to residential schools (ashramshalas) since 2015.

Keeping in mind the need of the hour, a hostel for boys has been started on an experimental basis in the campus so that their parents’ migration doesn’t affect their studies.
